Looking for places to visit near Villupuram? Within two hours' drive you can climb a centuries-old hill fort, see fossilised trees, walk around a sacred hill and end the day on a beach. Here are ten favourites, with approximate road distances from Villupuram town.
1. Gingee Fort (about 40 km)
A hilltop fort spread across three hills, with granaries, temples and a steep climb to Rajagiri for wide views. Go early in the morning; the climb takes 1.5 to 2 hours and there is little shade.
2. Thiruvakkarai (about 25 km)
Home to the Vakrakaliamman Temple and the National Fossil Wood Park, where you can see fossilised tree trunks millions of years old. An easy half-day trip.
3. Mailam Murugan Temple (about 35 km)
A hill temple to Lord Murugan near Tindivanam, busy on Kiruthigai days. Combine it with Tindivanam shopping on the way back.
4. Melmalayanur Angalamman Temple (about 50 km)
A major Amman temple that draws large crowds on new-moon (Amavasai) nights. Book a round trip so the car waits through the late-night crowds.
5. Thirukoilur (about 40 km)
Known for the Ulagalantha Perumal Temple, one of the 108 Divya Desams, on the banks of the Thenpennai river.
6. Tiruvannamalai (about 65 km)
Arunachaleswarar Temple, Ramana Ashram and the full-moon Girivalam around Arunachala hill. See our Tiruvannamalai taxi page.
7. Auroville (about 40 km)
The international township near Pondicherry. Visit the Matrimandir viewing point and the cafés; entry passes for the Matrimandir inner chamber must be booked in advance.
8. Pondicherry (about 40 km)
French Quarter streets, the Promenade beach and Sri Aurobindo Ashram. A perfect day trip: see our Pondicherry taxi page.
9. Chidambaram (about 95 km)
The Nataraja Temple, famous for the golden roof and the cosmic dance of Shiva. Plan around the six daily pujas.
10. Pichavaram mangroves (about 110 km)
Boat rides through one of the largest mangrove forests in India. Pair it with Chidambaram for a full day out.
How to plan your day trip
- Combine nearby places: Gingee + Thiruvakkarai, Pondicherry + Auroville, or Chidambaram + Pichavaram make good one-day pairs.
- Start early: leave by 6 or 7 am to beat the heat and the temple crowds.
- Book a round trip: the car and driver wait at each stop and bring you home. Same-day round trips are charged per km with a 250 km minimum; see the tariff.
